How to Calculate Your GPA

To calculate your GPA, convert each course grade to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0…), multiply each by the course's credit hours, add up those points, and divide by your total credit hours.

The formula

GPA = Σ ( grade points × credit hours ) ÷ Σ ( credit hours )

Step by step

  1. Convert each grade to points on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on).
  2. Multiply by credit hours to get each course's quality points.
  3. Add up all the quality points.
  4. Divide by the total number of credit hours.

Worked example

CourseGradePointsCreditsQuality pts
CalculusA4.0416.0
EnglishB+3.339.9
HistoryA-3.7311.1

Total quality points = 37.0; total credits = 10; GPA = 37.0 ÷ 10 = 3.70.

Weighted vs. unweighted

An unweighted GPA caps at 4.0. A weighted GPA adds bonus points for Honors (+0.5) and AP/IB (+1.0) classes, so it can go above 4.0. Most high schools report both.

FAQ

How do I calculate GPA by hand?

Convert each grade to points, multiply by the course's credits, add the results, then divide by total credits. For example, an A (4.0) in a 4-credit class and a B (3.0) in a 3-credit class give 25 points over 7 credits = 3.57.

Do credit hours matter for GPA?

Yes. GPA is credit-weighted, so a grade in a 4-credit course counts more than the same grade in a 1-credit course.

What is a weighted GPA?

A weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder classes — typically +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB — so it can exceed 4.0.
