How to Calculate Your GPA
To calculate your GPA, convert each course grade to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0…), multiply each by the course's credit hours, add up those points, and divide by your total credit hours.
The formula
GPA = Σ ( grade points × credit hours ) ÷ Σ ( credit hours )
Step by step
- Convert each grade to points on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on).
- Multiply by credit hours to get each course's quality points.
- Add up all the quality points.
- Divide by the total number of credit hours.
Worked example
| Course | Grade | Points | Credits | Quality pts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Calculus | A | 4.0 | 4 | 16.0 |
| English | B+ | 3.3 | 3 | 9.9 |
| History | A- | 3.7 | 3 | 11.1 |
Total quality points = 37.0; total credits = 10; GPA = 37.0 ÷ 10 = 3.70.
Weighted vs. unweighted
An unweighted GPA caps at 4.0. A weighted GPA adds bonus points for Honors (+0.5) and AP/IB (+1.0) classes, so it can go above 4.0. Most high schools report both.
