VIT CGPA to Percentage: How to Convert

If you've ever stared at your VTOP CGPA wondering what percentage to write on a job application or a foreign-university form, here's the good news: VIT uses one of the cleanest conversions in Indian higher education. No hidden deduction, no campus-specific quirk — just multiply by ten.

The formula

Percentage = CGPA × 10

That's it. Unlike some universities that subtract a constant before multiplying (more on that below), VIT applies a direct, one-to-one mapping between the 10-point CGPA and the 100-point percentage scale. Your CGPA already is your percentage divided by ten.

The same rule works for a single semester (SGPA)

The × 10 rule isn't limited to your cumulative number. To express one semester as a percentage, multiply that semester's SGPA by 10 as well — an SGPA of 8.2 is 82% for that term. Just be clear about which you're quoting: CGPA is the credit-weighted average across all semesters, while SGPA is a single term. Why VIT doesn't subtract anything (and some universities do)

This trips people up because not every Indian university converts the same way. A few examples of the contrast:

• VIT (and many autonomous institutes): percentage = CGPA × 10. Direct.
• VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University): percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 — it deducts 0.75 first, so the percentage is lower than CGPA × 10.
• CBSE (school boards): often uses a subject-grade-point average × 9.5.

Because of this variety, never assume your friend's university formula applies to VIT. For VIT, the answer is always the straightforward × 10.

The × 9.5 exception you'll occasionally meet

A small number of recruiters and a few foreign universities apply their own × 9.5 multiplier when normalising Indian CGPAs (it's a convention borrowed from CBSE). It produces a slightly lower percentage (an 8.5 becomes 80.75% instead of 85%). VIT itself does not use this — but if an employer's form specifically asks for × 9.5, follow their instruction and note the method you used.

When you need the official number

For a self-calculated figure on a resume, CGPA × 10 is universally accepted. That document is the authoritative version recruiters and universities will accept without question.
