What This GPA Means for You

Boğaziçi grades on the Turkish 4.0 letter system — AA, BA, BB, not A+/A/B. Your cumulative GPA decides your Honor / High Honor standing, scholarships, and graduation, with a 2.0 floor you must stay above.

BOUN-specific read

AA is the top grade — and every step down is worth half a point.

Boğaziçi's letters go AA (4.0), BA (3.5), BB (3.0), CB (2.5), CC (2.0), DC (1.5), DD (1.0), F (0) — clean 0.5 steps. Your GPA is the credit-weighted average of those values, so a heavier course moves it more. Get the letters and credits right and your number matches your transcript.

  • Read the double letters correctly: AA is the best grade, not "A+A".
  • Weight every course by its credits, not by counting courses.
  • Aim for the 3.00 (Honor) and 3.50 (High Honor) lines, and never dip below 2.0.

BOUN GPA milestones (4.0)

3.50+
High Honor

The top standing — commonly 3.50–4.00 (confirm the exact rule with your faculty).

3.00+
Honor

Strong standing, typically 3.00–3.49.

2.00
Good standing & graduation

A cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 (a CC average) is required to graduate.

DD = 1.0
Lowest credit grade

DD still earns credit for a course; F (0) is a fail.

How to Raise This BOUN GPA Fastest

The fastest move is the highest-credit course where one grade step lands — on this scale, one letter up (e.g. BB→BA) is worth +0.5 per credit.

Tip: each letter step is +0.5 here — lifting a heavy course one grade moves your GPA a lot.

1

Target the heavy course

Find the highest-credit course below your target grade — that's where one step moves the GPA most.

2

Chase the reachable step

One letter up (CC→CB or BB→BA, +0.5) is usually more realistic than jumping two grades.

3

Protect the Honor line

If you're near 3.00 or 3.50, defending a heavy course's grade can matter as much as chasing an AA.

BOUN GPA: Quick Overview

Boğaziçi University (BOUN) in Istanbul is one of Turkey's most selective universities, teaching in English on its historic Bosphorus campus. Like other Turkish universities, it grades on a 4.0 GPA scale with double-letter grades — AA at the top down to F — rather than the US A+/A/B system.

This page mirrors Boğaziçi's published method exactly: the AA–F values and their percentage bands, how the credit-weighted GPA is calculated, the Honor and High Honor standings, the 2.0 graduation floor, and the ECTS system that runs alongside it. It's a planning estimate; your official GPA is the one on your Boğaziçi transcript.

The Boğaziçi 4.0 Grade Scale

GradeMarks (%)Grade pointsMeaning
AA90–1004.0Excellent
BA85–893.5Very good
BB80–843.0Good
CB75–792.5Above average
CC70–742.0Average
DC65–691.5Below average
DD60–641.0Poor (lowest credit grade)
F0–590.0Fail

The grades step in clean 0.5 increments from AA to DD. DD (1.0) is the lowest grade that still earns course credit; F (0) is a fail. Non-GPA marks such as P (Pass), W (Withdrawal) and I (Incomplete) carry no grade points. Percentage boundaries can vary by instructor, since many courses are graded on a curve.

Reading Turkish Letter Grades (AA Isn't “A Plus”)

The double letters confuse almost everyone the first time — especially exchange and international students. Here's the key: each grade is two letters that bracket a band, not a plus/minus.

  • AA is the single highest grade (= a US A, 4.0) — not "A and A" or "A+".
  • BA sits between B and A (3.5), CB between C and B (2.5), and so on. The grade is "better-letter + worse-letter."
  • There is no A+ and nothing above 4.0 — AA is the ceiling, so the maximum GPA is exactly 4.00.
  • When converting for a US application, treat AA ≈ A (4.0), BA ≈ A−/B+, BB ≈ B (3.0), and so on — the 4.0 points already line up.

So your GPA already lives on a 4.0 scale — no conversion needed for most North-American purposes. The only thing to translate is the letters, not the number.

Honor, High Honor & the 2.0 Graduation Floor

Boğaziçi recognises strong students with Honor and High Honor standing, and sets a firm minimum to graduate:

  • High Honor — the top tier, commonly a GPA of 3.50–4.00.
  • Honor — strong standing, commonly 3.00–3.49.
  • Good standing & graduation — a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 (a CC average) is required to complete the degree. Drop below it and you'll be on probation and limited in the courses you can take.

The exact honor thresholds and conditions (such as having no F and finishing within the normal duration) are set by the University and can differ by faculty, so confirm the current rule with your department or the Registrar — but the 3.00 / 3.50 lines and the 2.0 floor are the markers to plan around.

Boğaziçi also reports credits in ECTS alongside its local credit hours, so your transcript carries both — useful when applying to European programs, but the GPA itself is the 4.0 figure above.

A Worked BOUN GPA Example

CourseGradeCreditsGrade pointsTotal
Calculus IAA34.012.0
Physics IBA43.514.0
Intro to ComputingBB33.09.0
English / ElectiveCB22.55.0
Total1240.0

GPA = 40.0 grade points ÷ 12 credits = 3.33 — comfortably Honor standing, knocking on High Honor. Notice the leverage: lifting the 4-credit Physics from BA to AA adds 2.0 points (GPA → 3.50, into High Honor), while the same jump in the 2-credit course adds only 1.0 — the heavy course is where the gain is.

What Counts as a Good BOUN GPA?

  • 3.50–4.00 — excellent; High Honor, and strong for scholarships, exchange, and graduate or professional school.
  • 3.00–3.49 — very good; Honor standing and competitive for most opportunities.
  • 2.50–3.00 — solid; a CB–BB average, comfortably in good standing.
  • 2.00–2.50 — passing and on track to graduate, with clear room to climb.
  • Below 2.00 — below the graduation floor; focus on the heaviest courses and reachable one-letter steps.

Because Boğaziçi is highly selective and many courses are curved, a 3.0+ here is a genuinely strong result. The same 4.0-scale number you see is what most North-American programs read directly — no conversion needed.

How to Calculate Your BOUN GPA (Step by Step)

  1. Convert each grade to its points — AA = 4.0, BA = 3.5, BB = 3.0, CB = 2.5, CC = 2.0, DC = 1.5, DD = 1.0, F = 0.
  2. Multiply by the course's credits (an AA in a 3-credit course is 4.0 × 3 = 12 points).
  3. Add the points from every graded course (skip P, W and I marks).
  4. Add up the total credits for those courses.
  5. Divide total points by total credits to get your GPA. Use one semester for your semester GPA, or all courses for your cumulative GPA.

Common BOUN GPA Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

  • Misreading the letters. AA is the top grade (4.0), not "A+"; BA (3.5) is higher than BB (3.0). Read "better-letter first."
  • Looking for an A+. There's no grade above AA — the maximum GPA is 4.00.
  • Counting courses instead of credits. A 4-credit course moves your GPA more than a 2-credit one; weight by credits.
  • Including P / W / I marks. They carry no grade points — leave them out of the calculation.
  • Forgetting the 2.0 floor. You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 to stay in good standing and graduate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated at Boğaziçi University?

Multiply each course's grade points (AA = 4.0, BA = 3.5, BB = 3.0, down to DD = 1.0 and F = 0) by its credits, add the results, then divide by total credits. One semester gives your semester GPA; all courses give your cumulative GPA.

What is the Boğaziçi (BOUN) grading scale?

A 4.0 letter scale: AA = 4.0 (90–100%), BA = 3.5 (85–89%), BB = 3.0 (80–84%), CB = 2.5 (75–79%), CC = 2.0 (70–74%), DC = 1.5 (65–69%), DD = 1.0 (60–64%), and F = 0 (fail). DD is the lowest grade that earns credit.

What does AA mean at Boğaziçi?

AA is the highest grade, worth 4.0 — the equivalent of an A. It is not "A plus" or "A and A"; Turkish universities use double letters where AA is the top, BA is next (3.5), and so on. There is no grade above AA, so the maximum GPA is 4.00.

What GPA is Honor or High Honor at BOUN?

High Honor is the top tier, commonly a GPA of 3.50–4.00, and Honor is commonly 3.00–3.49. The exact thresholds and conditions are set by the University and can differ by faculty, so confirm the current rule with your department or the Registrar.

What GPA do you need to graduate from Boğaziçi?

A cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 (a CC average) is required to complete the degree. Falling below 2.0 places you on probation and limits the courses you can take until you recover.

What is the lowest passing grade at Boğaziçi?

DD (1.0) is the lowest grade that still earns credit for a course; F (0) is a fail. However, you still need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 (a CC average) to stay in good standing and graduate.

Do I need to convert my BOUN GPA to a 4.0 scale?

No — Boğaziçi's GPA is already on a 4.0 scale (AA = 4.0). Most North-American programs read it directly. The only thing that needs translating is the letter codes (AA, BA, BB), not the GPA number.

Is this BOUN GPA calculator official?

No. It's a free, independent estimator built from Boğaziçi's published grading method. Your official GPA is the one on your Boğaziçi transcript and student portal.
