BOUN GPA Calculator

Boğaziçi University (BOUN) in Istanbul is one of Turkey's most selective universities, teaching in English on its historic Bosphorus campus. Like other Turkish universities, it grades on a 4.0 GPA scale with double-letter grades — AA at the top down to F — rather than the US A+/A/B system.

This page mirrors Boğaziçi's published method exactly: the AA–F values and their percentage bands, how the credit-weighted GPA is calculated, the Honor and High Honor standings, the 2.0 graduation floor, and the ECTS system that runs alongside it. It's a planning estimate; your official GPA is the one on your Boğaziçi transcript.

The double letters confuse almost everyone the first time — especially exchange and international students. Here's the key: each grade is two letters that bracket a band, not a plus/minus.

• AA is the single highest grade (= a US A, 4.0) — not "A and A" or "A+".
• BA sits between B and A (3.5), CB between C and B (2.5), and so on. The grade is "better-letter + worse-letter."
• There is no A+ and nothing above 4.0 — AA is the ceiling, so the maximum GPA is exactly 4.00.
• When converting for a US application, treat AA ≈ A (4.0), BA ≈ A−/B+, BB ≈ B (3.0), and so on — the 4.0 points already line up.

So your GPA already lives on a 4.0 scale — no conversion needed for most North-American purposes. The only thing to translate is the letters, not the number.

Boğaziçi recognises strong students with Honor and High Honor standing, and sets a firm minimum to graduate:

• High Honor — the top tier, commonly a GPA of 3.50–4.00.
• Honor — strong standing, commonly 3.00–3.49.
• Good standing & graduation — a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 (a CC average) is required to complete the degree. Drop below it and you'll be on probation and limited in the courses you can take.

The exact honor thresholds and conditions (such as having no F and finishing within the normal duration) are set by the University and can differ by faculty, so confirm the current rule with your department or the Registrar — but the 3.00 / 3.50 lines and the 2.0 floor are the markers to plan around.

Boğaziçi also reports credits in ECTS alongside its local credit hours, so your transcript carries both — useful when applying to European programs, but the GPA itself is the 4.0 figure above.

• 3.50–4.00 — excellent; High Honor, and strong for scholarships, exchange, and graduate or professional school.
• 3.00–3.49 — very good; Honor standing and competitive for most opportunities.
• 2.50–3.00 — solid; a CB–BB average, comfortably in good standing.
• 2.00–2.50 — passing and on track to graduate, with clear room to climb.
• Below 2.00 — below the graduation floor; focus on the heaviest courses and reachable one-letter steps.

Because Boğaziçi is highly selective and many courses are curved, a 3.0+ here is a genuinely strong result. The same 4.0-scale number you see is what most North-American programs read directly — no conversion needed.

1. Convert each grade to its points — AA = 4.0, BA = 3.5, BB = 3.0, CB = 2.5, CC = 2.0, DC = 1.5, DD = 1.0, F = 0.
2. Multiply by the course's credits (an AA in a 3-credit course is 4.0 × 3 = 12 points).
3. Add the points from every graded course (skip P, W and I marks).
4. Add up the total credits for those courses.
5. Divide total points by total credits to get your GPA. Use one semester for your semester GPA, or all courses for your cumulative GPA.

• Misreading the letters. AA is the top grade (4.0), not "A+"; BA (3.5) is higher than BB (3.0). Read "better-letter first."
• Looking for an A+. There's no grade above AA — the maximum GPA is 4.00.
• Counting courses instead of credits. A 4-credit course moves your GPA more than a 2-credit one; weight by credits.
• Including P / W / I marks. They carry no grade points — leave them out of the calculation.
• Forgetting the 2.0 floor. You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 to stay in good standing and graduate.
