What This GPA Means for You

At HCT your CGPA decides three real things: your academic standing (Good Standing at 2.00), your continuing-student scholarship, and whether you graduate with Distinguished Honors — all on a 4.0 scale where a straight A is the maximum.

HCT-specific read

At HCT there is no A+ — a plain A is a full 4.0, and that is the ceiling.

HCT's scale runs A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on down to F = 0. There is no A+ and no D−. Get the grade points right and your semester GPA — and the cumulative GPA (CGPA) that drives scholarships and honors — matches the registrar's to two decimals.

  • Use the real HCT grade points (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B− = 2.7…).
  • Weight every course by its credit hours; heavier courses move the CGPA more.
  • Track your CGPA against 2.00 (standing), 3.00 (scholarship), and 3.75 (Distinguished Honors).

HCT CGPA signals

3.75
Distinguished Honors

CGPA 3.75+ earns Distinguished Honors and a 40% continuing-student scholarship.

3.00
Scholarship band

CGPA 3.00–3.74 earns a 20% continuing-student scholarship.

2.00
Good Standing

CGPA below 2.00 places you on academic probation.

How to Raise This HCT GPA Fastest

The fastest move is the highest-credit course where one grade step lands — and on this +/− scale, a B→B+ or C→C+ is a clean +0.3 per credit.

Tip: the scholarship line is CGPA 3.00 and Distinguished Honors is 3.75 — one heavy-course bump can cross either.

1

Target the heavy course

Find the highest-credit course below your target grade — that's where the leverage is.

2

Chase the reachable step

B→B+ (+0.3) or C→C+ (+0.3) is often more realistic than a full letter jump.

3

Defend the 2.00 line

If you're near probation, avoiding one low grade in a heavy course matters as much as chasing an A.

HCT GPA: Quick Overview

A Higher Colleges of Technology campus in the United Arab Emirates
A Higher Colleges of Technology campus in the United Arab Emirates.

The Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) is the United Arab Emirates' largest applied higher-education institution, with campuses across the emirates and programmes in engineering, business, information technology, health sciences, education, and applied media. Teaching is in English, and academic work is measured in credit hours.

HCT grades on a 4.0 scale. Each letter grade carries a fixed number of grade points per credit hour, and your semester GPA is the credit-weighted average of those points for one term. Your cumulative GPA (CGPA) applies the same calculation across your whole programme, and it governs the outcomes that matter: Good Standing (CGPA 2.00), continuing-student scholarships, Distinguished Honors, and graduation. This page mirrors HCT's published rules — the exact grade table, GPA vs CGPA, the scholarship tiers, and the probation ladder — so the figure you get matches your transcript.

C70–732.0
C−67–691.7
D+64–661.3
D60–631.0
F0–590.0

This is HCT's official 4.0 table. The maximum GPA is 4.00, reached with straight A grades — there is no A+, and no D−. Non-grade marks such as W (Withdrawn) and P (Pass) sit outside the point system and are not counted in your GPA.

HCT Scholarships & Distinguished Honors by CGPA

This is where your HCT CGPA pays off directly. HCT rewards strong continuing students with tuition scholarships tied to your cumulative GPA:

3.75 – 4.00Distinguished Honors40% tuition scholarship
3.00 – 3.74High achiever20% tuition scholarship
2.00 – 2.99Good Standing

That makes the 3.00 and 3.75 lines worth real money, not just bragging rights. If your CGPA is sitting at 2.9 or 3.7, the calculator above shows the single grade bump that gets you over the line. Scholarship rules and eligibility can change by year and programme, so confirm the current terms with your campus before you count on them.

Academic Standing & Probation at HCT

HCT reviews your standing by your cumulative GPA against the 2.00 line:

  1. Good Standing — your CGPA is 2.00 or higher.
  2. First Academic Probation — your CGPA falls below 2.00 after you have accumulated at least 21 credit hours of study.
  3. Second Academic Probation — your CGPA is still below 2.00 at the end of the regular semester following the first probation.
  4. Academic Dismissal — you fail to reach a 2.00 CGPA by the end of the next regular semester after the second probation.

Two practical notes: summer terms are not counted in the probation periods, and a minimum CGPA of 2.00 is required to graduate — HCT states that appeals to the graduation CGPA requirement are not accepted. If you're close to the line, model exactly how many credit hours at which grades pull you clear with the Cumulative GPA Calculator.

A Worked HCT GPA Example

EnglishA34.012.0
MathematicsB+43.313.2
IT FundamentalsB33.09.0
BusinessA−33.711.1
Total1345.3

GPA = 45.3 grade points / 13 credit hours = 3.48 — comfortably in the 20% scholarship band. Notice the leverage: lifting the 4-credit B+ to an A− adds 1.6 grade points (GPA → 3.61), so the heavy course is where a single upgrade moves you most toward the 3.75 Distinguished Honors line.

What Counts as a Good GPA at HCT?

  • 3.75+ — excellent. Distinguished Honors and the 40% scholarship; strong for graduate study and competitive jobs.
  • 3.50–3.74 — very strong; one good term from the Distinguished Honors line.
  • 3.00–3.49 — solid; clears most filters and earns the 20% continuing-student scholarship.
  • 2.00–2.99 — Good Standing and on track to graduate, with clear room to push toward the scholarship band.
  • Below 2.00 — academic probation; focus on the heavy courses and the reachable half-step upgrades.

Because the scholarship and honors lines (3.00 and 3.75) are concrete, even one grade in a heavy course can move you across a band — use the planner above to find the cheapest grade that gets you there.

How to Calculate Your HCT GPA (Step by Step)

In short: your HCT GPA is the credit-weighted average of your grade points on the 4.0 scale. The full method, the same one the calculator above uses:

  1. Convert each grade to its grade points — A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.
  2. Multiply by the course's credit hours (a B+ in a 4-credit course is 3.3 × 4 = 13.2 grade points).
  3. Add the grade points from every graded course (skip W and P marks).
  4. Divide by the total credit hours to get your semester GPA.
  5. For your cumulative GPA (CGPA), include every graded course from every semester — total all grade points and divide by all credit hours.

Common HCT GPA Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

  • Looking for an A+. HCT has no A+ — a straight A is the maximum 4.0. A calculator with an A+ = 4.0 / A = 3.7 split (or a US-style A+ at 4.3) will give the wrong HCT GPA.
  • Forgetting the minus grades. A− (3.7), B− (2.7), and C− (1.7) are real HCT grades — don't round them to the plain letter.
  • Counting W or P marks. Withdrawn and Pass marks carry no grade points and never enter your GPA — leave them out.
  • Averaging semester GPAs for your CGPA. Cumulative GPA is credit-weighted across all courses, not a plain mean of your semester GPAs.
  • Ignoring the scholarship lines. 3.00 and 3.75 are worth tuition money — if you're at 2.95 or 3.70, plan the bump that crosses them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated at HCT?

Multiply each course's grade points (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on down to F = 0) by its credit hours, add the results, then divide by total credit hours. One term gives your semester GPA; all courses give your cumulative GPA (CGPA).

What is the HCT grading scale?

A 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. The maximum is 4.00, with score bands such as 90–100 = A and 60–63 = D.

Does HCT have an A+?

No. At HCT a plain A is the highest grade and is worth a full 4.0. There is no A+ (and no D−). This is the most common reason a generic calculator gives the wrong HCT GPA.

What CGPA do you need for a scholarship at HCT?

HCT offers continuing-student tuition scholarships by CGPA: a 20% scholarship for a cumulative GPA of 3.00–3.74, and a 40% scholarship for a CGPA of 3.75 or higher, which is also recognised as Distinguished Honors. Confirm current terms with your campus, as eligibility can change.

What CGPA keeps you in good standing at HCT?

A cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher. If your CGPA falls below 2.00 after you have accumulated at least 21 credit hours, you are placed on academic probation; continued performance below 2.00 leads to second probation and then academic dismissal. Summer terms are not counted in the probation periods.

What is the minimum CGPA to graduate from HCT?

A cumulative GPA of 2.00 is required to graduate from any HCT programme and its exits. HCT states that appeals to the graduation CGPA requirement are not accepted, so the 2.00 line is firm.

Can I repeat a course at HCT?

HCT allows a student to repeat any pass/fail General Studies course once only. How a repeated grade is reflected in your CGPA is set by HCT's registry rules, so check the current academic regulations or your registrar for the exact effect on your record.

Is this HCT GPA calculator official?

No. It is a free, independent estimator built from HCT's published grading rules. Your official GPA is the one in your HCT records and on your transcript.
