What This KTU GPA Means for You

KTU runs a 10-point scale, so a "7.5" here is a 75% equivalent, not a fraction of 4. Drag the dot, or use the calculator above, to read any KTU SGPA or CGPA against the lines that decide placements and honours.

Where you land on KTU's 10-point scale

Read your KTU number the right way. On the official scale, your CGPA times 10 is your percentage.

7.50Good standing
5.0Pass 6.0Placement 7.5Strong 8.5Honours

Tip: enter your grades above and this jumps to your number.

P (5.0) is the lowest passing grade, so a sub-5 average means failed courses are dragging you down. Most campus placement drives ask for 6.0+ (60%) with no active backlogs, 7.5 is a comfortably strong record, and B.Tech Honours needs a CGPA of 8.5 under the 2019 scheme (8.0 under 2024).

5.0Pass average

P carries 5 grade points and is the lowest pass. A CGPA under 5 means active backlogs are pulling you down.

6.0Placement floor

Many recruiters set a 60% (CGPA 6.0) cutoff with no standing backlogs across 10th, 12th, and B.Tech.

7.5Strong record

A 7.5 CGPA is a clean 75%, comfortably clearing most higher-study and core-company eligibility bars.

8.5Honours

B.Tech Honours needs a graduating CGPA of 8.5 (2019 scheme) or 8.0 (2024 scheme) with no F grade.

How to Raise This KTU GPA Fastest

The fastest KTU SGPA jump is usually the highest-credit course where one grade band is still realistic.

Tip: a 4-credit course moves your SGPA twice as much as a 2-credit course.

1

Sort by credits

Target 4-credit core theory courses before 1 or 2-credit labs and electives.

2

Clear F and FE first

A single 0-point failed course wrecks an SGPA. Clearing it through a supply exam is the biggest single lift.

3

Protect your internals

KTU scales internals down if your exam mark is low (see the standardisation tool below), so do not bank on high CIE alone.

KTU GPA: Quick Overview

APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU), Kerala
APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU), the affiliating technical university for Kerala. Illustration by KnowMyGPA.

APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU), formerly Kerala Technological University, is the affiliating body for almost every engineering college in Kerala. Its B.Tech results come out as a Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) for each semester and a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) across the whole degree, both on a 10-point scale where O is 10 and F is 0.

Two things make a KTU-specific calculator worth using. First, the scale is credit-weighted, so a 4-credit theory course moves your SGPA far more than a 2-credit lab. Second, KTU students live with three different regulation schemes (2015, 2019, and 2024), a credit-based "year-back" progression rule, and an internal-mark standardisation cap that can quietly pull a strong term down. The tools on this page cover all of it.

This page is built for the searches KTU students actually make: KTU SGPA calculator, KTU CGPA calculator, KTU CGPA to percentage, and KTU grade points. The calculator gives the SGPA first, shows the percentage instantly, and the tools below handle progression, honours, and the internal-mark trap.

Source: KTU B.Tech Regulations 2015 and 2019. The 2024 scheme uses a different ladder (S = 10 down to P = 5.5) and a stricter two-tier pass rule, explained below. Non-credit courses do not count toward SGPA or CGPA.

How to Calculate SGPA and CGPA at KTU

The KTU SGPA formula is credit-weighted:

SGPA = sum(credit x grade point) / total credits

Say a semester has O in a 4-credit course, A+ in a 4-credit course, B+ in a 3-credit course, and B in a 3-credit course. The quality points are 10x4, 9x4, 8x3, and 7x3, which is 40 + 36 + 24 + 21 = 121 over 14 credits, so the SGPA is 8.64.

CGPA is not the plain average of your SGPAs. It is weighted by the credits in each semester:

CGPA = sum(SGPA x semester credits) / total credits

So a heavier semester pulls your CGPA more than a light one. Both numbers are rounded to two decimals, in line with KTU guidelines.

KTU CGPA to Percentage (Both Formulas)

Since June 2023, KTU converts CGPA to a percentage by a direct multiply: percentage = CGPA x 10. Older batches were stuck with a formula that subtracted 2.5 first. Enter your CGPA to see both, so you never under-report on a job or PG application.

Current formula (2023 onward)--CGPA x 10
Legacy formula (2019, R6.21)--CGPA x 10 - 2.5
-

Enter your CGPA to see both percentage conversions.

The direct CGPA x 10 formula was approved by the 23rd Academic Council in June 2023 and applied retrospectively to the 2015 scheme too. Use it unless an old transcript or employer specifically asks for the legacy value. KTU issues updated equivalent-percentage certificates on request.

The Internal Mark (CIE) Down-Scaling Trap

This is the KTU rule that catches strong students off guard. Your internal (CIE) mark percentage cannot exceed your end-semester (ESE) mark percentage by more than 30. If your exam mark is low, KTU scales your internals down automatically. Enter your raw marks to see whether your internals are at risk.

- -

Enter your internal and exam marks.

Maximum eligible CIE % = ESE % + 30. KTU recomputes your standardised internals using this cap before deciding your grade, which is why high internals plus a weak exam can still land a low grade. The fix is the exam mark, not more internal effort.

Year-Back Progression Checker

KTU blocks registration for higher semesters until you have cleared a minimum number of credits, the rule students call "year-back" or "year-out". Pick your scheme and target to see whether you clear the credit bar.

- -

Pick your scheme, target semester, and earned credits.

2019 scheme thresholds: 21 credits for Semester 5, 47 for Semester 7. 2015 scheme: 26 and 52. Note: KTU waived all minimum-credit progression requirements for the 2025-26 academic year under Section 14(5), so confirm whether a waiver applies to your batch before assuming you are blocked.

KTU Honours and Minor Degrees

  • B.Tech Honours (2019 scheme): 20 extra credits, a graduating CGPA of 8.5 or higher, a grade of C or better in every Honours paper, and zero tolerance for any F. Honours grades are folded into your CGPA.
  • B.Tech Honours (2024 scheme): 15 extra credits and a CGPA of 8.0 or higher, with the Honours credits kept out of your main CGPA. You can earn part of the 15 through Level-5 electives (2 extra credits each).
  • Minor degree: 15 credits in another discipline across Semesters 3 to 6. A failed minor theory course can be replaced with an approved 8-week MOOC, and incomplete minor courses are excluded from your CGPA.
  • 2024 credit relaxation: you can graduate with 160 credits instead of 170, but the shortfall cannot come from Maths, Program Core, Seminars, Mini Project, or the Final Project, and any uncovered course is counted as 0 in your CGPA.

How We Built This Page

The 10-point grade values, the SGPA and CGPA formulas, the 2023 percentage rule, the internal-mark standardisation cap, and the year-back credit thresholds come from KTU's own B.Tech regulations and Academic Council decisions - not aggregator sites. We are not affiliated with KTU; always confirm against your latest regulation and KTU portal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What scale does KTU use for GPA?

KTU uses a 10-point scale: O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8.5, B+ = 8, B = 7, C = 6, P = 5, and F = 0. Since 2021 there is also LP (Low Pass) worth 4 points, capped at 10 courses across the B.Tech.

How do I calculate KTU SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA = sum(credit x grade point) / total credits for the semester. CGPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester SGPAs, not a plain average. Both are rounded to two decimals.

How do I convert KTU CGPA to percentage?

Since June 2023, percentage = CGPA x 10. So a 7.5 CGPA is 75%. Older batches used CGPA x 10 - 2.5, but the subtraction was removed and applied retrospectively, including to the 2015 scheme.

What is a good CGPA at KTU?

6.0 (60%) clears most placement filters with no backlogs, 7.5 (75%) is a strong record for higher studies and core companies, and 8.5 reaches B.Tech Honours under the 2019 scheme (8.0 under 2024).

What is the KTU year-back rule?

Under the 2019 scheme you need 21 credits to register for Semester 5 and 47 for Semester 7 (26 and 52 in the 2015 scheme). KTU waived these minimums for 2025-26, so check whether a waiver applies to your batch.

Why is my KTU grade low when my internals were high?

KTU caps your internal (CIE) mark percentage at 30 points above your exam (ESE) percentage. If your exam mark is low, your internals are standardised down, which can drop your grade even with strong term-time marks.

Is this KTU GPA calculator official?

No. It is an independent planning tool based on KTU's published B.Tech regulations. Your KTU result portal and grade card are the official record.

Planning the Rest of Your KTU CGPA?

Now that you have your SGPA, the target calculator works out what you need next semester, and the converter handles any scale a form throws at you.
