What This GPA Means for You

At SQU your cumulative GPA (cGPA) decides academic standing — the probation line sits at 2.00, and graduation requires staying above it.

SQU-specific read

At SQU, an A (90 and above) is the highest grade — there is no A+.

Sultan Qaboos University grades on a plus/minus 4.0 scale that starts at A = 4.0 and steps down in the .7/.3 pattern to D = 1.0, the lowest passing grade — there is no D− either. Marks map to grades through fixed bands (90+ is an A, 60–62.9 is a D), so your SIS transcript and this calculator speak the same language.

  • Use the real SQU grade points (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3 … D = 1.0).
  • Weight every course by its credit hours; a 4-credit course moves the GPA more.
  • Keep your cGPA at 2.00 or higher — below it means probation.

SQU GPA signals

4.00
Ceiling

A is the top grade, so the GPA maxes at 4.0.

3.00
Strong record

Comfortable for scholarships and postgraduate plans.

2.00
Probation line

cGPA below 2.00 places you on academic probation.

How to Raise This SQU GPA Fastest

The fastest move is the highest-credit course where one grade step lands — each step on SQU's ladder is worth 0.3 or 0.4 points.

Tip: if your cGPA is hovering near 2.00, protecting the heavy course from a low grade matters as much as chasing an A.

1

Target the heavy course

Find the highest-credit course below your target grade — that's where the leverage is.

2

Chase the reachable step

B→B+ (+0.3) or C+→B- (+0.4) is often more realistic than a full letter jump.

3

Defend the 2.00 line

One F (0.0) in a heavy course can drag a borderline cGPA under the probation line.

SQU GPA: Quick Overview

Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) in Muscat is Oman's national university, and its grading runs on a 4.0 scale with no A+: scoring 90 or above earns an A worth the full 4.0, and grades step down through A− (3.7), B+ (3.3), and so on to D (1.0), the lowest passing grade. There is no D− and the only failing letter is F (0.0).

Your SIS transcript reports two numbers built from this scale: the semester GPA (sGPA) for each term, and the cumulative GPA (cGPA) across everything you've taken — the figure that controls probation and graduation. This page mirrors the official system: the exact grade table, the marks-to-grade bands, the probation ladder, and a worked example that matches how the registrar computes it.

This is SQU's published grade scale: no A+ and no D−, with 60 marks as the pass line. Some colleges have used slightly different mark bands in certain years (e.g. A starting at 88), so match the bands on your own course outline if they differ. Source: SQU Grade Scale (official PDF).

sGPA vs cGPA at SQU

Your SQU transcript shows two GPAs, and they do different jobs:

  • sGPA (semester GPA) — the credit-weighted average of one semester's courses. Enter a single term above to get exactly this.
  • cGPA (cumulative GPA) — every graded course since your first semester, credit-weighted. This is the number that determines probation, course-load limits, and graduation.

Because cGPA is credit-weighted across all semesters, it is not the plain average of your sGPAs — a heavier semester pulls harder. And the more credits you accumulate, the slower the cGPA moves, which is why protecting it early matters. To roll a new semester into your existing cGPA, use the cumulative GPA calculator.

Probation & Academic Standing at SQU

SQU ties your enrolment directly to the 2.00 line, with a clear escalation ladder:

  1. Good standing — cGPA of 2.00 or higher.
  2. Probation — if your cGPA falls below 2.00, you're placed on academic probation. SQU treats this as a corrective step: your course load is reduced to a manageable level until you recover.
  3. Warning — after two consecutive semesters on probation, you receive a formal warning notice: one final semester to pull your cGPA back to 2.00.
  4. Withdrawal — failing to reach 2.00 in that final semester means being required to formally withdraw from the University.

There's also a softer early signal: if your semester GPA drops below 2.00 while your cGPA is still above it, you must meet your academic advisor before registering for the next semester. Graduation itself requires a cGPA of at least 2.00.

Where Your SQU cGPA Lands

Every SQU milestone on one 4.0 ruler — from the probation line to a perfect record.

2.50

3.00
Excellent — postgraduate-ready
3.50

Bars are scaled to the 4.0 maximum. Below 2.00 triggers probation; 3.00+ keeps scholarships and graduate-school options comfortably open.

A Worked SQU GPA Example

Calculus IA34.012.0
PhysicsB+33.39.9
English for ScienceB43.012.0
Oman & Islamic CivilizationC+22.34.6
Total1238.5

sGPA = 38.5 grade points / 12 credit hours = 3.21. Notice the 4-credit English course outweighs the 2-credit one — lifting it from B to B+ (+0.3 × 4) would raise the semester to 3.31, while the same step in the 2-credit course adds only half as much.

Common SQU GPA Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

  • Looking for an A+. SQU's scale has none — 90 or above is an A worth 4.0, and the GPA ceiling is exactly 4.0.
  • Assuming a D− exists. The ladder stops at D (1.0); below 60 marks the grade is an F (0.0).
  • Averaging sGPAs to get the cGPA. The cGPA is credit-weighted across all courses — semesters with more credit hours count more.
  • Ignoring credit weight inside a semester. A grade change in a 4-credit course moves your GPA twice as much as in a 2-credit course.
  • Letting a borderline cGPA drift. The probation ladder escalates fast — two consecutive probations bring a final-semester warning, so act in the first weak semester, not the third.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated at SQU?

Multiply each course's grade points (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, down to D = 1.0 and F = 0) by its credit hours, add the results, then divide by total credit hours. One semester gives your sGPA; all semesters together give your cGPA.

What is the highest grade at SQU?

An A, worth 4.0, earned with marks of 90 or above. SQU has no A+ — the GPA scale tops out at exactly 4.0.

What marks do you need for each grade at SQU?

A = 90+, A- = 87–89.9, B+ = 83–86.9, B = 80–82.9, B- = 77–79.9, C+ = 73–76.9, C = 70–72.9, C- = 67–69.9, D+ = 63–66.9, D = 60–62.9, and below 60 is an F. Some colleges have used slightly different bands in certain years, so check your course outline.

What cGPA puts you on probation at SQU?

A cumulative GPA below 2.00. Probation reduces your course load while you recover; two consecutive semesters on probation bring a formal warning with one final semester to reach 2.00, after which you would be required to withdraw.

What is the difference between sGPA and cGPA at SQU?

sGPA is the credit-weighted GPA of one semester; cGPA covers every graded course since your first semester. The cGPA — not the sGPA — controls probation, course-load limits, and graduation (which requires at least 2.00).

What GPA do you need to graduate from SQU?

A cumulative GPA of at least 2.00, alongside completing your degree plan's required credits. A cGPA of 3.00+ is the comfortable band for scholarships and postgraduate applications.

Is this SQU GPA calculator official?

No. It is a free, independent estimator built from SQU's published grade scale and academic regulations. Your official sGPA and cGPA come from your SQU student record (SIS) and transcript.
