Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is one of Malaysia's leading public research universities, with its main campus in Johor Bahru (Skudai) and a city campus in Kuala Lumpur. Like other Malaysian public universities, UTM grades on a 4.00 scale and reports two numbers each semester: your GPA (that semester only) and your CGPA (cumulative, across every semester).

This page mirrors UTM's published grading rules — the exact grade points, the difference between GPA and CGPA, how credit hours are weighted, and how the Honours classification and Dean's List actually work — so the number you get here matches what shows up on your slip.

This is the question most UTM students actually have, and most calculators blur it. The two numbers answer different questions:

• GPA (Grade Point Average) is for one semester only. It's the credit-weighted average of the subjects you took that semester. Your GPA is what determines whether you make the Dean's List for that semester.
• CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the credit-weighted average of every subject across every semester so far. It's the number on your transcript that employers, scholarship boards, and postgraduate admissions look at — and it sets your final degree classification.

The crucial point: your CGPA is not the average of your semester GPAs. Because semesters have different total credit hours, you must re-pool all the grade points and all the credit hours together. A 4.00 semester with 12 credits and a 3.00 semester with 21 credits do not average to 3.50 — the heavier semester pulls the CGPA closer to 3.00.

At UTM, your bachelor's degree is awarded with a classification based directly on your final CGPA. These are fixed bands — not ranked against your cohort — so you always know which class you're working toward:

This is why the 3.50 line matters so much at UTM: it's the single boundary between First Class and Second Upper, and it's the same threshold used for the Dean's List each semester. Many scholarships (including bond-free and government schemes) and competitive postgraduate places treat First Class or a strong 2:1 as the cut, so the band — not just the raw number — is what gets read.

Two thresholds bracket your time at UTM — one to aim for, one to stay above:

1. Dean's List (Anugerah Dekan) — awarded for a semester GPA of 3.50 or higher, with no failed subject and the minimum registered credit hours for a full-time semester. It's based on that one semester's GPA, so a strong semester earns it even if your CGPA is still climbing.
2. Good standing — a CGPA of 2.00 or above keeps you clear. Slip below 2.00 and you're typically placed on academic probation, with conditions to recover the following semester.
3. Graduation floor — you need a minimum 2.00 CGPA to graduate. Sustained results below 2.00 can lead to dismissal under your faculty's academic regulations.

Exact probation and dismissal steps are set by UTM's academic regulations and can differ slightly by faculty, so check your own programme handbook — but the universal lines are 3.50 (Dean's List / First Class) and 2.00 (good standing and graduation).

• 3.50–4.00 — First Class Honours; Dean's List territory and the strongest tier for scholarships, JPA/bond-free schemes, and postgraduate admission.
• 3.00–3.49 — Second Upper (2:1); the band most graduate employers and competitive programmes treat as solid.
• 2.50–2.99 — Second Lower (2:2); a clear pass with room to climb toward a 2:1.
• 2.00–2.49 — Third Class; good standing and on track to graduate, but worth lifting where you can.
• Below 2.00 — probation risk; focus on the heaviest subjects and the reachable one-step upgrades.

Because UTM's classification is a fixed CGPA band, the highest-return habit is a steady, strong CGPA across all semesters — not one brilliant semester followed by a weak one, since the heavy semesters pull the cumulative number hardest.

In short: your UTM GPA is the credit-hour-weighted average of your grade points on the 4.00 scale. The full method, the same one the calculator above uses:

1. Convert each grade to its grade points — A/A+ = 4.00, A− = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, B = 3.00, B− = 2.67, C+ = 2.33, C = 2.00, C− = 1.67, D+ = 1.33, D = 1.00, D− = 0.67, E = 0.
2. Multiply by the subject's credit hours (an A in a 3-credit subject is 4.00 × 3 = 12 grade points).
3. Add the grade points from every graded subject that semester.
4. Divide by the total credit hours to get your semester GPA.
5. For your CGPA, pool every subject from every semester — total all grade points and divide by all credit hours (not the average of your semester GPAs).

• Averaging your semester GPAs. CGPA re-pools all grade points and all credit hours — a heavy semester counts more than a light one, so the simple average is wrong.
• Thinking A+ beats A. At UTM an A+ is exactly 4.00, the same as an A — it can't push you above 4.00.
• Counting subjects instead of credit hours. A 4-credit subject moves your CGPA more than a 1-credit co-curriculum; weight by credit hours.
• Confusing GPA with CGPA. Dean's List uses your semester GPA; your degree class uses your cumulative CGPA — they're different numbers.
• Ignoring the pass minimum on core subjects. D− is the lowest passing grade overall, but some major/core subjects require a higher minimum — check your faculty's rule before assuming a pass.
