What Your METU GPA Actually Means

METU (ODTU) runs a 4.00 scale, but with its own letters - AA down to FF - and its own bars for standing and honors. Here is where any GPA lands.

Where you land

Drag the dot, or use the calculator above, to read any METU CGPA against the bars that matter.

3.00Honor (Onur)
2.0Good standing 3.0Honor 3.5High Honor

Tip: enter your grades above and this jumps to your number.

The bar runs the full 0 to 4.00 scale. A 2.00 keeps you in good standing and is the minimum to graduate; 3.00 and up earns a semester honor.

2.00Good standing

The floor for normal status and the minimum CGPA to graduate. Below it for two terms in a row means probation.

2.50High achiever

A CGPA of 2.50+ lets you add up to two extra courses to your load with advisor approval.

3.00Honor (Onur)

A semester GPA of 3.00 to 3.49 (normal load, no pass/fail) earns the Onur certificate.

3.50High Honor

A semester GPA of 3.50 or higher earns Yuksek Onur, METU's top semester recognition.

How to Raise Your METU CGPA the Fastest

Enter your courses above and the planner finds the single course where one realistic grade step moves your GPA the most. At METU you have a real lever most systems don't: a retake replaces the old grade outright.

Fastest move

Add your grades and credits to see your best move.

Once you enter a few courses, this finds the class where one realistic grade improvement would lift your GPA the most.

A heavy course one letter below its ceiling is usually the biggest single lever.

1

Protect your heaviest course

A 5-credit course moves your GPA far more than a 2-credit one. Defend the big courses first.

2

Repeat to replace, not to add

Retaking a course swaps the old grade for the new one in your CGPA. Target your lowest grades in heavy courses, but mind the limits below.

3

Mind the 6-repeat limit

Voluntary repeats (of a DD or higher) are capped at 6 per degree and must happen within four semesters. Spend them where they pay off most.

One METU quirk: the 6-repeat lifetime cap is waived if you're on probation, or if you're a senior who has passed everything but still needs to reach the 2.00 graduation floor. In those cases, repeat freely.

What CGPA Do You Need?

Whether you're climbing off probation or chasing a 3.00, this tells you the GPA you'd have to average over your remaining credits to hit a target.

Enter your numbers above.

Because retakes replace the old grade, repeating a low course in a heavy credit can move your CGPA faster than this average suggests.

Does This Grade Count in Your CGPA?

METU has a lot of special grade codes, and most of them don't behave the way you'd expect. Pick one and find out, plus what to do about it.

How METU Grades, and Why Repeats Work in Your Favor

METU's biggest difference from US systems is a friendly one: when you repeat a course, the new grade replaces the old one in your CGPA - it doesn't sit next to it. So unlike a law-school CAS GPA, a retake at METU genuinely erases a bad grade (as long as it's the same course code; a different code needs the REPLACEMENT link in SAIS).

The passing line is DD (1.00). Below it, FD (0.50) and FF (0.00) both fail, and a few attendance or status codes can hurt you quietly - an NA counts as a 0.00, and an unconverted Incomplete turns into one. Plenty of other codes stay out of the average entirely: S/U non-credit courses, EX exempt courses, NI courses, and a clean W.

Here's what a single retake does, since the old grade is replaced rather than kept:

TranscriptCreditsBefore retakeAfter retake
Everything else562.852.85
MATH 119 - first try (CC)42.00replaced
MATH 119 - retake (BA)4-3.50
Resulting CGPA602.792.89

The old CC (2.0) is swapped out and the BA (3.5) takes its place, so the CGPA rises from 2.79 to 2.89 with no double-counting. That's why retaking a low grade in a heavy course is the single most effective CGPA move at METU.

What Counts in Your GPA, and What Doesn't

METU's special codes each behave differently. Here's the full map.

Grade / codeIn your GPA & CGPA?What it means
AA to FF (letter grades)YesStandard graded courses, AA (4.0) down to FF (0.0).
Repeated course (same code)Yes - new replaces oldThe retake grade swaps in; the original drops out of the CGPA.
FD (conditional fail)Yes - as 0.50A failing grade; counts until you repeat the course.
NA (not attended)Yes - as 0.00Attendance-triggered, treated mathematically like an FF.
S / U (non-credit)NoSatisfactory / Unsatisfactory; excluded, and not in the credit totals.
EX (exempt)NoExemptions (exchange, proficiency exams); logged as passed, left out of the average.
NI (Not Included)NoExtra electives or graduate courses taken as an undergraduate.
W (withdrawn)NoDoesn't affect the GPA, but the course must be repeated.
I (incomplete)Not yetNeutral until resolved; becomes FF/U if not completed within a week.

Standing, Probation & Honors at METU

Your CGPA decides how much you can take, whether you're on probation, and which honor you earn. The probation rules changed with a Senate update effective the 2025-2026 Spring semester.

Course load by standing

CGPAStatusWhat it unlocks
≥ 2.50High achieverUp to 2 extra courses on top of the normal load (advisor approval).
≥ 2.00Successful1 extra course with advisor approval.
< 2.00UnsuccessfulStandard limits; focus shifts to repeating failed courses.

Probation (Sinamali), 2026 tiers

A CGPA below 2.00 for two consecutive terms puts you on probation. The new tiers depend on exactly how low it is:

CGPATierWhat you can register for
1.80 - 1.99ModerateUp to 3 new (never-taken) courses, within your department's normal load.
< 1.80SevereNo new courses or W-marked courses; you must repeat your FF, FD, NA, and U grades first.

On probation the usual 3-course minimum load is waived. Source: METU Senate regulation update dated 13 January 2026 (effective Spring 2025-2026).

Honors: a clean semester (normal load, no pass/fail) with a GPA of 3.00 to 3.49 earns an Honor (Onur) certificate, and 3.50 or higher earns High Honor (Yuksek Onur). To graduate, your CGPA must be at least 2.00 (3.00 for graduate programs).

How the METU GPA Is Calculated

It's a credit-weighted average. Each grade becomes points (AA is 4.0, BB is 3.0), you multiply by the course credits, add it all up, and divide by total credits. METU credits come from class hours: credit = theoretical hours + (lab or practical hours ÷ 2), so a (1-4)3 course is 1 + (4 ÷ 2) = 3 credits.

GPA = total (credit × grade point) ÷ total credits

Your semester GPA uses that term's courses; your CGPA uses everything, with repeated courses replaced rather than added. S/U, EX, NI, and W courses stay out of the totals entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 3.0 GPA good at METU?

Yes. A semester GPA of 3.00 to 3.49 earns an Honor (Onur) certificate at METU, and 3.50 or higher earns High Honor (Yuksek Onur). On the cumulative side, 2.50 makes you a high achiever (more course load) and 2.00 is the floor for good standing and graduation. A 3.0 sits comfortably in honor territory.

Does retaking a course replace the old grade at METU?

Yes. When you repeat a course with the same code, the new grade fully replaces the old one in your CGPA, whether it's higher or lower. If you repeat with a different course code, it isn't automatic - you link them with the REPLACEMENT option in SAIS. Voluntary repeats (of a DD or higher) are limited to 6 per degree and must happen within four semesters.

What CGPA do I need to graduate from METU?

A minimum CGPA of 2.00 for undergraduate programs, and 3.00 for graduate programs. You also need passing grades (DD or above for undergraduates) in all credit courses and S in non-credit courses.

What is academic probation (Sinamali) at METU?

You're placed on probation if your CGPA stays below 2.00 for two consecutive terms. Under the rules effective Spring 2025-2026, it's tiered: with a CGPA of 1.80 to 1.99 you may take up to three new courses, and below 1.80 you can't take new or withdrawn-marked courses at all and must repeat your FF, FD, NA, and U grades first.

What's the difference between FD and FF at METU?

Both are failing grades. FD (conditional fail) is worth 0.50 and covers roughly a 50-59 score; FF is worth 0.00. DD (1.00) is the lowest passing grade, so anything below it - FD, FF, or NA - has to be repeated.

Do S/U, NI, EX, and W courses count in my GPA?

No. Non-credit S/U courses, NI (Not Included) courses, EX exempt courses, and clean W withdrawals are all excluded from both your semester GPA and your CGPA. The exceptions are NA, which counts as a 0.0, and an unresolved Incomplete, which becomes an FF.

What is an NA grade at METU?

NA means Not Attended, and it counts as a 0.00 just like an FF. It's triggered by missing the attendance requirement - for example, the Department of Modern Languages enforces 80% attendance on compulsory courses like ENG 101 and 102 - or by missing both the midterms and the final.

What GPA gets Honor or High Honor at METU?

A semester GPA of 3.00 to 3.49 earns Honor (Onur), and 3.50 or above earns High Honor (Yuksek Onur). You must carry a normal course load and not have chosen the pass/fail option that term to be eligible.

Is this METU GPA calculator official?

No. It's a free planning estimate built on METU's published AA-to-FF scale and rules. Your official GPA and CGPA are the ones in the METU Student Affairs (SAIS) system. Small differences usually come from repeats, special codes, or rounding the calculator can't see.
